Rabies is almost always fatal and can spread to people, so the vaccine is legally mandated for dogs in most states and countries. The schedule is simple once you know the pattern.
The pattern
- First shot: at 12–16 weeks of age.
- First booster: one year after the first shot — always at the 1-year mark, regardless of the product.
- After that: every 1 or 3 years, depending on the vaccine used and your local law. Many areas accept a 3-year vaccine; some require annual.
Why the timing is strict
An expired rabies vaccination can mean fines, problems boarding or traveling, and — if your dog bites someone or is exposed — a much longer quarantine. Always keep proof of the current rabies certificate.
Check your local rule
Because rabies requirements are set by local law, confirm your city/county/state rule (or your country's) with your veterinarian. A PetsAlbum profile stores the date given and estimates the next due date so you can renew on time.
